About the Artist
Angela Maria "Ani" DiFranco (born September 23, 1970, in Buffalo, New York) is an American-Canadian singer-songwriter whose music blends folk rock, alternative rock, and punk influences. A pioneering DIY artist, DiFranco founded Righteous Babe Records in 1990 to release her own music rather than be beholden to a mainstream record company, originally selling cassette tapes out of the back of her car at shows before building a self-distribution network reaching over 100 independent retailers.
Dedicated to remaining independent, DiFranco built her audience through years of relentless touring rather than major-label marketing. She made her first appearance on the Top 200 albums chart with 1996's Dilate, then reached a career-high #22 on the U.S. album chart with 1998's Little Plastic Castle.
DiFranco supports many social and political movements through her music and through the Righteous Babe Foundation, backing causes including abortion rights and LGBT visibility, and counts folk legend Pete Seeger among her mentors.
