Exceptional signed Oaxacan alebrije wood carving of a fantasy roadrunner bird, hand-carved from copal wood and meticulously hand-painted with multiple distinct pattern zones — pink and white stripes, teal wave scales, dark navy with orange arcs, red-striped wings with teal chevrons, and a stunning rainbow striped tail fan. Signed on the underside of the wing: “José Hernándes M. e Hijo — Ebaristo Hernándes J.” José Hernández Morales is one of the original first-wave alebrije masters from Arrazola, Oaxaca, active since the 1970s, featured in Smithsonian Magazine, and connected by family to Manuel Jimenez — the father of the modern alebrije tradition. Ebaristo is his son. Approximately 8 inches tall x 12 inches long. Excellent condition — vivid colors, no chips or damage. A genuine signed piece from one of Oaxaca’s most celebrated carving families.
