It is composed of two juxtaposed views representing on the one hand the port cove of Hobart, with a line of civil and religious buildings on the seaside dominated by a bell tower, several large sailing ships in the harbor and small boats near the quays attesting to the commercial and maritime activity of the port, on the other hand a suburban landscape of New Town showing a colonial dwelling surrounded by a palisade, cultivated plots and lined paths leading to hills, all dominated in the background by the massif of Mount Wellington. The scenes recreate the contrast between port activity and the rural peri-urban area of ​​Tasmania (then often called Van Diemen's Land), evoke the presence of European settlers and local boats, and help identify Hobart as the main colonial anchor point on the island of Tasmania.
