I seek out classic pipes from the best early companies, and this Lonsdale is a rare fine. It’s made by Hardcastle pipes from their “Family period” which makes in early. It’s marked Lonsdale MADE IN LONDON ENGLAND and 73. Here’s some info from Pipedia which might help. In 1946 Alfred Dunhill bought the shares turning Hardcastle into a 100% Dunhill subsidiary. But until 1967 family management of the company retained a certain independence.
It's a classic sandblast finished bulldog, with diamond shank and saddle bit. The sandblast brought out some very pretty grain, right side is a fan of rings, and left is nubby pebble grain. The condition of the exterior is very good, with light normal use showing. The interior is well-seasoned and in fine shape, and draws easy. The stem is original and well cut, and made of vulcanite, light smoothed tooth wear. It weighs in at about 1.1 ounces. Freshly polished and ready to smoke!
