The engraving was part of a work listing works of art linked to the history of the conquest of Algeria present at Versailles. The battle of Mouzaïa Pass, or capture of Teniah de Mouzaïa (Arabic "teniah" meaning "mountain pass" in French), designates a battle taking place in Algeria, on May 12, 1840 during the conquest of Algeria by France.

On May 12, 1840, the capture of the Mouzaïa pass was a battle where the 2nd light infantry regiment took, with bayonets, several levels of redoubts guarded by Abd el-Kader's regular infantry. The Zouaves also took part in the action in another sector. The victory of the French that day made them masters of the summit of the Atlas. The Duke of Orléans exercised command of the French army during this engagement, assisted by Colonel Gentil.
