This is an exceptionally early example of the Frank Holton “New Proportion” cornet, serial #6646, built in Chicago between 1903 and 1905 during the first years of Holton’s production. The valve block carries the “PAT. APPLIED FOR” stamp, confirming manufacture prior to Holton’s first valve patents — a detail highly prized by collectors of early American brass.
The New Proportion was Holton’s flagship cornet of the era, designed around a revised bore and taper intended to improve intonation and response compared to contemporary models. This early example features the long‑model silhouette, elegant bracing, and the full floral bell engraving reading:

The engraving remains crisp and deeply cut, and the original silver plate retains good coverage with the natural patina expected of a 120‑year‑old instrument.
