(Lot of 3) Ancient Indo-Scythian AR SILVER SATRAPS, Drachm Coins VF/XF
These coins were deeply influenced by the remnants of the Indo-Greek civilization that preceded them in the region.
- Greek Coinage Influence: The Western Satraps minted highly distinctive silver coins that featured the king's profile on the obverse and stylized motifs on the reverse. These coins uniquely included garbled, degraded Greek legends (letters) running along the edges, which they adopted to maintain commercial trust and carry on the legacy of previous Indo-Greek currencies.
- Historical Predecessors: The Indo-Scythians (including the ancestors of the Western Satraps) expanded into the subcontinent around the 1st century BCE, systematically displacing or absorbing the remaining Indo-Greek kingdoms in places like Gandhara and Punjab.
- Hellenistic Titles: Some prominent Western Satrap rulers, such as Nahapana, adopted the Greek title Basileus (meaning "King") on their rare, early drachms to assert their royal authority and appeal to local Hellenized populations.
