RARE Saturno pendant lamp model 5637 by Kazuo Motozawa for Staff Leuchten, Germany, 1972
It is our understanding that the model number is 5367.
The original Staff Leuchten maker's sticker is still inside the light fixture. We added a photo in the Gallery of the Staff Leuchten logo as found in a Google search.
An iconic example of space age / mid-century modern lighting, the Saturno pendant lamp was designed by Kazuo Motozawa in the early 1970's and produced by Staff Leuchten in Germany (also manufactured by Yamagiwa in Japan).
This model (5637) is composed of fourteen concentric rings in chrome-plated metal, each painted white on the underside to enhance light reflection and create a soft, diffused glow. The layered construction produces a striking halo-like illumination effect, characteristic of the era’s fascination with space, light, and futuristic form.
Both sculptural and highly functional, the saturno exemplifies Motozawa’s exploration of light as an architectural element, where structure and illumination are seamlessly integrated.
This model belongs to the Saturno series, which exists in several variations, including table lamps and alternative pendant forms such as the aureola. The present version—with its 14-ring construction—is among the most visually refined and balanced iterations.
A highly collectible piece of 1970s space age design, ideal as a statement pendant in modern, vintage, or architectural interiors.
