C D Fredericks cartes de Visite depicting General William T Sherman. William Tecumseh Sherman (1820 – 1891) was an American soldier, businessman, educator, and author. He served as a general in the Union Army during the Civil War (1861–1865), earning recognition for his command of military strategy but criticism for the harshness of his scorched earth policies, which he implemented in campaign against the Confederate Army^.  British military theorist and historian B H Liddell Hart declared that Sherman was "the most original genius of the American Civil War" and "the first modern general".. *Charles DeForest Fredricks (December 11, 1823 – May 25, 1894) was an American photographer. Born in New York City in 1823 he learned the art of the daguerreotype from Jeremiah Gurney in New York, while he worked as a case maker for Edward Anthony. After travels to South America and Paris, he returned to New York City where he rejoined Jeremiah Gurney, During the latter half of the 1850s he operated a studio in Havana. Here he received awards for his photographic oil colors and watercolors. During the 1860s he operated a studio on Broadway that was noted for its Cartes de visites.
