An unusual, early Victorian, English sampler worked by Emma Bellamy, Aged 11 in 1848 in Benington, depicting the Tower of Babel. Housed in a vintage frame.
Provenance: Benington is a village and civil parish in the East Hertfordshire district of Hertfordshire, England, about 35 miles north of London.
The sampler is worked in coloured silks with pious verse and a variety of traditional motifs above a couple in a country scene and Adam and Eve astride 'The Tree of Life' all set within a meandering floral border.
The verses read:
Tower of Babel
This contrivance did move God to divide their language And confound their speech that They could not understand, One another.
So the Lord scattered them Abroad upon the face of the Earth and they left off to Build the city.
Approximate Dimensions (Including the frame):
H: 57.5 cm x W: 34.5 cm
Condition:
Very good for 178 years. No holes or colour run. Age related discolouration to backing material as to be expected. Thread colours remain bright with limited fading. The sampler is sewn onto card.
I have taken the sampler out of the frame and re-photographed in daylight.
