Antique Shan Burmese Crowned Buddha Bronze with Original Gilding & Lacquer.
c. 1870-1910
A beautifully preserved and highly evocative antique Shan Buddhist bronze from Eastern Burma (Myanmar), dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.
This finely cast image depicts the Buddha seated in Bhumisparsha Mudra, Earth-Touching Gesture, the moment of enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree when the Buddha called the Earth to witness his victory over illusion. Unlike the familiar monastic form, he is portrayed here in royal regalia, wearing an elaborate crown and princely ornaments in the distinctive Shan tradition, symbolising the Buddha as a universal spiritual sovereign.
The figure retains remarkable traces of its original decorative finish, with surviving black lacquer, red lacquer ground and worn gilding creating an exceptionally rich and authentic surface. Decades of devotional handling and age have produced a patina impossible to replicate, lending the sculpture a warmth and presence often absent in later decorative reproductions.
Particularly attractive is the elegant multi-tiered throne with its intricate beaded and foliate ornament, together with the finely modelled facial features and soaring flame finial. The exposed bronze displays areas of natural oxidation consistent with age and genuine devotional use.
Unlike many later examples, the sculpture remains entirely untouched, retaining its original surface and character. Such pieces were traditionally kept on household altars or within monastery settings as objects of meditation and veneration.
A charming and highly decorative antique Buddhist image, equally suited to the collector of Southeast Asian art, Buddhist sculpture, or authentic devotional objects with genuine age and presence.
