Antique Gilt Bronze Buddha Head. Southeast Asian Buddhist Sculpture. Second half of 20th c.

A striking and deeply contemplative gilt bronze Buddha head, acquired from an important private collection in Liège, Belgium, renowned for its holdings of Southeast Asian Buddhist art.

Cast in bronze and retaining extensive traces of original gilding beneath a rich dark patina, the sculpture displays a serene expression with downcast eyes, elongated earlobes and finely modelled spiral curls rising to a prominent ushnisha. 

The surface exhibits genuine age-related wear, with remnants of gilding surviving in the protected recesses of the face and hair, creating a wonderful depth and warmth that only develops through decades of handling and display.

The underside bears an intriguing workshop or foundry seal, likely identifying the artisan or casting workshop responsible for its creation. While the precise mark remains unrecorded, it appears original to manufacture and contributes to the sculpture’s character and authenticity.

Stylistically the head draws upon the great Buddhist traditions of Thailand and Sri Lanka, embodying the calm spiritual presence associated with early devotional Buddhist imagery.

A highly decorative and atmospheric piece, equally suited to a serious collection of Asian art or an elegant interior setting.
