Directed by John Heyer for the Shell Film Unit in 1954, the film follows outback mailman Tom Kruse on his fortnightly journey along the Birdsville Track from Marree in South Australia to Birdsville in Queensland, capturing a remote and vanishing way of Australian life.

The second disc features a documentary about filmmaker John Heyer and his works, including footage of Tom Kruse's final journey along the Birdsville Track.
