Antique Rare Religious Monstrance with Saint Francis of Assisi Relic 18th C

Description :

A lacquered and gilded wooden monstrance containing a reliquary of Saint Francis of Assisi.

This Neoclassical object combines the rich decoration typical of the Baroque period scrolls, gilding, and a cherub with the symmetry and geometric simplicity characteristic of Neoclassicism. Carved wood, lacquered white, and partially gilded with gold leaf.

The wooden base imitates marble. Above the white lacquered section runs a frame adorned with a series of fully gilded oval motifs, while on the sides are two large inverted scrolls covered in gold.

At the junction of the shaft and the upper section is the head of a finely carved and gilded cherub, which appears to support the reliquary.

Inside is a relic of Saint Francis of Assisi: a fragment  encircled by sacred threads. A fascinating patina of age.
