Head Facing Forward -19th Century Symbolist Lithograph by Fernand Khnopff

 

An 1898 lithograph by Belgian Symbolist artist Fernand Khnopff (1858-1921), titled Une tête de face / Head Facing Forward. The image shows a quiet, dreamlike female portrait with long flowing hair, a direct forward gaze, and delicate tonal shading. The restrained composition and introspective mood are characteristic of Khnopff’s Symbolist style. This lithograph was commissioned for and published in the English art magazine The Studio, January 1898, Vol. XII, No. 58. The page has the artist’s monogram in the lower right of the image, and The Studio blind stamp on the sheet.
