This is a rare 1-shaku 4-sun (approx. 20.5 inches / 52 cm) Japanese Nagado Taiko drum made from hollowed Keyaki (Japanese Zelkova wood), dated February 1938 (Showa 13).
The drum features an exceptionally beautiful natural wood grain with strong artistic character and a deep amber patina developed through age.
The body wood has aged and dried beautifully over the decades, producing a powerful yet pleasant deep bass sound that resonates through the chest with surprising clarity and light responsiveness.
Many names of people connected to the drum are carved into the body, making it a fascinating historical piece. Someone with ties to the original community or festival may even recognize the inscriptions.
The Japanese phrase “Taiko-ban wo osu” (to fully approve or guarantee something) originates from branded marks pressed onto taiko drums. This drum also bears a large branded seal reading “Gomei,” adding to its historical atmosphere.
Comes with vintage drumsticks and a folding round stool currently used as a display stand substitute, both included with the set.
Condition is good overall considering its age.
There do not appear to be any major cracks in the body or tears on the drumheads.
Please carefully review all photos before purchasing, as this is a vintage item.
