Biography: Marie Victoria Yu Lim (Chinese-American, 1954–2020) Marie Lim was the daughter of Leng-Bian Yu and Dr. John Go Lim. She attended Old Trail School in Bath, Ohio (in Cuyahoga Valley National Park - the only independent school in the United States that is in a national park) and graduated from Kenyon College in 1976 with a bachelor's degree in art. She continued her education with classes at The University of Akron and the Blossom-Kent Art Program. After becoming a teacher at the Spring Garden School, Marie attended summer programs in Waldorf philosophy and education at the High Mowings School in New Hampshire. Lim was a respected artist and educator based in Akron, Ohio remembered for her intricate prints and her later work with fiber arts, often focusing on global and mythological themes. Many of her early works centered on Africa, particularly its animals, culture, and folklore. Traditional African design continued to inform her artwork, from her prints to her pottery, another medium she adopted later in her career. She was twice the Artist in Residence at Studio II at the M. O'Neil Company. Her artwork had been featured in the Akron Art Institute Christmas Show, a one-artist show at the Mansfield Art Center, the Cola Bjel Gallery in Rocky River, the Weathervane Playhouse, Lakeland Community College, and in Art-the-Park Festival at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. She shifted her focus to felt work and knitting in 2002 after attending the Augusta Heritage Festival. Beyond her own studio practice, Marie was a dedicated educator, teaching art and handwork at the Spring Garden Waldorf School for 28 years. |
