AUSTRALIAN HYLTON
1940s RG LADIES
WATCH & BAND
IMMACULATE CONDITION
This isn’t ticking but the case and
band are in amazing original condition.
It dates to about 1945 (see below)
Both the case and band are from
the Australian watch case makers:
HANDLEY
This ORIGINAL band is stamped:
HANDLEY 1/20 9ct sil lined.
Dial is marked:
HYLTON
15 JEWELS
The movement is also stamped
HYLTON
And
SWISS MADE
Inside back case says:
HANDLEY
GOLD FILLED FRONT
STAINLESS STEEL BACK
10 YEAR QUALITY
CASE
This would have been an expensive
watch in its day I’m sure.
‘Hylton’ were a jewellers at 65 York St,
Sydney called Taylor Hylton & Co.
who were putting ads in the Sydney
Morning Herald in 1945 to buy
second hand jewellery, watches,
silver and silver plate etc so my
assumption is this watch dates
to the mid 1940s.
The band and watch case almost
look new.
There is virtually no wear the gold
plate that I can see only to the
crown which is fairly normal.
The band looks perfect with the
watch with its scallop shell links.
The dial looks a bit ho hum out of
The case but back where it belongs
gets almost luminance in the right light.
I know technically this is not a ‘collectors’
watch but from an Aussie Watchmakers’
history point of view it has to be worth
preserving surely.
CONDITION
This isn’t ticking but the case and
band are in amazing original condition.
The only thing that shows its age
And that its been worn are a few
small scratches on the ‘crystal’
(which might be glass, not sure)
that you should be able to see
in the photos I hope.
There is virtually no wear the gold
plate on either case or band that
I can see – except
of course to
crown which is normal.
The scallop shell links of the Handley
band look perfect with it.
There’s a little ding on the corner
of one that I only saw in the photos
but I can’t see in real life.
It’s just a really pretty little watch
that has survived in astoundingly
good condition.
3cm long- lug to lug
1.9cm wide inc. crown
0.8cm deep
It weighs: 16.5 grams
