Maurice of Saxony, born in Goslar in Saxony on October 28, 1696, natural son of Augustus II, king of Poland and elector of Saxony, and the Countess of Auritz. Enlisted at the age of 12, he served in the European armies before settling in France. Colonel of a regiment at 18, he distinguished himself at Denain (1712), then in the campaigns of Flanders and Germany. He took the service of France in 1720 and stood out in the War of the Austrian Succession. He defeated the Austrians at Fontenoy (May 11, 1745), a resounding victory which assured Belgium of French arms. Created Marshal of France in 1744, then Marshal General of the king's camps and armies, he again won Rocoux (1746) and Lawfeld (1747), ensuring French preponderance in the Netherlands. Installed at the Château de Chambord, he led a sumptuous life between countryside and rest. He died in Chambord on November 20, 1750, leaving the reputation of a great captain, tactical innovator and victorious leader of Louis XV.
