Pre-WWII Japanese Enamel Sign "Tobacco"

Description

About This Item

  1. This is an authentic vintage enamel sign for tobacco, used in Japanese retail shops before World War II. The most significant feature is that the word for tobacco is written from right to left as "Kobata" instead of "Tabako". This right-to-left writing style was standard in Japan before the end of WWII, proving its authenticity and historical age. The striking red background with a white oval and bold black calligraphy was the official design designated by the Japanese government monopoly for authorized tobacco retailers at the time. This is not a modern reproduction but a true survivor of a bygone era, possessing a wabi-sabi aesthetic that cannot be replicated.

Size

  1. The sign measures approximately 45.3cm in width and 33.3cm in height. The thickness of the steel plate is 1.2mm, and the total weight of the item is 1075g.

Condition

  1. The sign shows beautiful and natural aging typical of a genuine vintage item over 80 years old. There is visible rust around the edges and mounting holes, along with enamel loss and surface scratches. These are not flaws but testaments to its survival through Japanese history. Please note that the black display stand shown in the photographs is for display purposes only and is not included in the sale.
