The product is an antique hand carved Stanhope Peep Viewer of a hand, Made in France. A clenched hand, holds the viewer featuring six micro photographs of six buildings in France. Included are the Esplanade, the Mansions, Merchant Taylor’s House, The Steyne, and a Cathedral. It indicates that it was “Made in France” and is a “Souvenir of Sosnor.” I tried to get a photo of the six images, but could not. I do have one picture of one of the six buildings. The Peep Viewer measures 4 3/4 inches long. The Stanhope is in excellent condition with minor signs of its age. Please see my photos for condition.
The Stanhope was invented by René Dagron in 1857 which he called an optical bijou. He wanted an optical device to view micro photographs without a microscope.
