My dear Sir:
I believe you are Treasurer of the Conn[ecticut Academy. If I am mistaken, please pass along the enclosed, to the right box.
Yours truly,
J. H. Trumbull
P.S. Don't forget to be working up a paper for the Philological, at Easton.
The Postscript (P.S.): The casual reminder regarding a "paper for the Philological, at Easton" provides excellent historical framing. The American Philological Association (of which Trumbull was a prominent member) held its 5th Annual Session in Easton, Pennsylvania, hosted by Lafayette College, in July 1873. Trumbull was writing in late 1872 to nudge a fellow scholar to finish writing an academic research paper in time for the upcoming summer convention.
The letter came to me in a collection of ephemera, all of which was kept in folder with clear plastic sleeves – which have preserved it in excellent condition.
