BIOGRAPHY: John William "Billy" Mackel (1912–1986) was an acclaimed American jazz banjoist and guitarist. Mackel played banjo early in his career in his home town of Baltimore, Maryland but switched to guitar in the the 1930s. He debuted with the Bubby Johnson Orchestra in 1939 and toured with the band on the vaudeville ciruit. In 1944 he joined Lionel Hampton's band and was an influential member for over 30 years. He also recorded with Milt Buckner, Arnett Cobb, Herbie Fields, and Billy Williams.
