Antique Victorian Gold-Filled Telescopic Magic Pencil Citrine Seal Terminal c.1860
A fine antique Victorian telescopic "magic pencil" in gold-filled metal with a citrine seal terminal, dating to approximately 1840–1870. The extending barrel features all-over engine-turned hobnail and basket-weave pattern decoration throughout, with the characteristic longitudinal slot of the telescoping mechanism. Approximately 10cm in length. Weight 9.3g.
The base terminal features a substantial cast acanthus leaf and scrollwork cap in heavier gold-tone metal, set with a faceted amber/golden-brown citrine or topaz coloured stone seal. The stone is set in a shaped scalloped bezel. Unmarked gold-filled metal throughout.
A handsome and well-made example of Victorian writing instrument craftsmanship, with good decorative detail on both the engine-turned barrel and the ornate cast terminal.
