Antique Victorian Gold-Filled Propelling Pencil with Amethyst Seal – c.1840–1870
A superb quality antique Victorian propelling pencil in gold-filled metal, with working slide mechanism and amethyst seal terminal. Dating to approximately 1840–1870, this is an exceptional example of Victorian desk and writing accessory craftsmanship.
The entire barrel is covered in fine engine-turned and hand-engraved foliate scrollwork throughout. The pencil tip end features an ornate cast collar with beaded detailing and a further decorative cast scrollwork collar at the junction. The base terminal is fitted with a large faceted amethyst set in a shaped scalloped gold-tone bezel — a functional seal stone for wax sealing correspondence. The propelling mechanism operates correctly. Weight 18.94g. Approximately 13cm in length.
The amethyst shows rich purple colour with natural internal characteristics. The gold-filled casing retains excellent detail throughout with warm patina consistent with age.
