HOW THE HOT SURFACE IGNITER WORKS

The 41-218 is a silicon carbide resistive igniter. When the oven control board calls for heat, it sends 120V AC through the igniter element. The silicon carbide material heats to glowing red-hot temperature (about 2200°F) within 30-60 seconds and stays at that temperature while drawing 3.2–3.6 amps of current.

In oven applications, the igniter sits adjacent to a bimetal gas safety valve. As the igniter heats up, it warms a bimetal strip inside the valve, which physically opens the gas valve seat. Only then does gas flow to the burner orifice — and the same hot igniter immediately lights it.

Failure modes: cracked silicon carbide element (no glow), weakened resistance over time (glows but not hot enough to open the bimetal valve), shorted element (blows the oven fuse), or broken mounting bracket. Replacing the igniter with a genuine Robertshaw 41-218 restores reliable oven ignition.
