The Robertshaw 40-454 is a single-piece phenolic plastic thermostat dial designed to push onto a standard 0.187" (3/16") D-shaft on residential gas range and oven thermostat controls. It is what the cook turns to set oven temperature from the off / pilot position up through the bake-temperature range.

The phenolic body is specifically chosen for high-heat tolerance — conventional thermoplastic knobs distort against a hot range surround, while phenolic resists deformation at the temperatures common on gas range control panels. The flat-down stem orientation indexes the dial correctly so printed temperature graphics align with the thermostat detents.

Common failures: knob cracks at the D-shaft hole from over-tightening, splits from being pried off with a screwdriver, snaps off when forced past the stop position, or simply goes missing during prior service or stove cleaning.
