2022 Lincoln Shield Cent — Description and History
The 2022 Lincoln Shield Cent is the 63rd year in the modern Lincoln Cents series,
continuing the Lincoln Shield design introduced in 2010. It features Victor David Brenner’s iconic Lincoln portrait
on the obverse and Lyndall Bass’s Union Shield reverse with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM on the horizontal bar.
Obverse:
Victor David Brenner’s Lincoln head, the longest-running U.S. coin design in history.
Reverse:
Lyndall Bass’s Union Shield, symbolizing national unity.
Historical Context:
The Lincoln Shield series was introduced in 2010 to replace the Lincoln Memorial design,
aiming to modernize the cent’s appearance while retaining the familiar Lincoln image.
The Union Shield reverse was chosen to represent the United States’ unity and diversity.
Metal Composition: 97.5% Zinc - 2.5% Copper
