HOW THE WATER INLET VALVE WORKS

The IMV-604 is a pilot-operated single-solenoid water valve built on Robertshaw's S-30 commercial platform. House water (20–120 PSI) enters the 3/8" compression inlet and is held back by a spring-loaded diaphragm sealing against the outlet seat. When the Scotsman ice machine controller energizes the 240V coil, the solenoid lifts a small pilot disc, releasing diaphragm back-pressure and allowing full flow through the outlet to the ice mold.

The pilot-operated design gives the IMV-604 a much higher flow capacity per watt of coil power than direct-acting valves — one of the reasons Robertshaw specs it for commercial duty cycles. The polypropylene body resists corrosion and the mineral deposits common in commercial-kitchen water service.

Failure modes: open coil (no fill at all), weakened solenoid (slow or partial fill cycles), clogged inlet screen (no flow on the inlet side), or stuck diaphragm (constant trickle leak). Replacing the valve with a genuine Robertshaw IMV-604 restores factory-spec ice production rates.
