"History of Towns and Villages of the Ukrainian SSSR" is an encyclopedic publication on the history of Ukrainian towns and villages, consisting of 26 volumes. This encyclopedia was the first comprehensive historical work, each volume covering the history of settlements in individual regions of Ukraine. The encyclopedia describes all of Ukraine's settlements, of which there were nearly 40,000 at the time. Regional state archives, museums, and local history research institutions played a key role in collecting materials for essays on towns and villages. Research libraries, which house the most comprehensive collection of local history literature, also played a significant role. The encyclopedia's creation was led by the State Historical Library of the Ukrainian SSR, which, together with the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, developed methodological recommendations for organizing the work of regional libraries to assist the authors of "History of Towns and Villages...." The work of archivists was led at the ministerial level by A.G. Mityukov. The historiography of Ukrainian history contains a significant number of works devoted to the creation of this fundamental collective work. They reveal the functioning of the publication's Main Editorial Board (Editor-in-Chief: P.T. Tronko), the results and significance of the collaboration between scholars and the public.
