A striking antique Tibetan Buddhist thangka depicting a sacred white elephant carrying an elaborate multi coloured Mandala or Dharma Wheel upon its body, surrounded by auspicious birds and flanked below by seated lama figures and ritual offerings.

In Buddhist symbolism the white elephant represents purity, enlightened wisdom, spiritual strength and the miraculous conception of the Buddha himself. The richly coloured circular mandala upon the elephant’s body evokes the Wheel of Dharma and the cosmic order of Vajrayana Buddhist teaching.

The painting combines deeply symbolic tantric imagery with charming folk-monastic artistry, producing a work of strong spiritual atmosphere and decorative presence.

Hand painted in mineral and natural pigments on cloth and preserved within an attractive silk-mounted textile frame with embroidered lower apron panel featuring phoenix imagery.
