The Darnall Cricket Ground—particularly the “New Ground” opened in 1824—was once described as the “finest ground in the Kingdom.”
It hosted important early cricket matches involving major teams such as All-England Eleven and county sides including Sussex County Cricket Club.
The ground declined in popularity following the opening of Hyde Park, and by around 1830 the site was sold. Today the area is occupied by Darnall Cemetery.
Surviving admission tokens such as this are now considered rare early cricket collectibles, with comparable examples achieving around £280 at specialist auctions.
