A charming mid-century illustrated children’s book by German author Anne Geelhaar, published by W. & R. Chambers in 1963 and translated into English by Marion Koenig.
Originally issued in German as Der Schneemann sucht eine Frau, this edition retains the distinctive East German illustration style of Erich Gürtzig, with atmospheric winter scenes, stylised cityscapes and colourful snow-themed artwork throughout. The visual design has a strong period aesthetic typical of early 1960s European children’s publishing and displays especially well.
The story follows a lonely snowman searching for companionship through snowy streets and moonlit landscapes, accompanied by whimsical full-page and double-page illustrations. The combination of minimalist typography, graphic layouts and soft colour work gives the book strong decorative and nostalgic appeal.
Published by the long-established Scottish publisher W. & R. Chambers, whose archives and publishing history remain well documented in British publishing history.
