An antique Southern Indian bronze of the Hindu deity, Vishnu. A lost wax casting with aged patination.19th c.

This antique, lost wax cast bronze came to us from an important British, single owner collection, though would have started life in Southern India, more specifically in the State of Orissa, now known as Odisha, in the early 20th c.

Rajaraja's Chola dynasty flourished around Thanjavar in the 12th and 13th c. and this bronze is very much in the Chola style. The patination suggests it dates to the 19th c. The etched U-shaped Vaishnava tilaka mark to the forehead as seen in the lead image confirming it is a bronze of Vishnu.
