Physical Condition
Blade: Steel blade with a dark, oxidized patina and localized pitting. No maker’s etchings are visible on the ricasso.
Hilt: Three-bar brass guard with a heavy mustard patina. The grip retains its original carved wooden core and cord wrap; the leather and wire are no longer present.
Scabbard: Steel construction with a dark patina and two iron carry rings.
Stamps & Markings
The hilt and guard feature several deep, authentic period strikes:
Inspector Mark: "A.D.K." stamped on the knuckle bow (Andrew D. King, U.S. Ordnance Sub-inspector).
Date Stamp: "1864" (or "1844" depending on wear) stamped below the inspector initials.
Rack / Unit Number: "C 1 A 6" deeply stamped into the top of the brass guard.
Assembly / Bench Number: "96" stamped on the inner side of the knuckle bow near the pommel.
