An antique Indian copper-gilt bronze of the highly revered bodhisattva Tara, the Buddhist goddess of compassion. A rare depiction with wonderfully aged patination. 20th c.

To Buddhists, Tara is a Bodhisattva and celebrated as the Goddess of Compassion. Here she stands on a double lotus petal pedestal known as a Viswapadmasana. 

The stem of a lotus flower extending above her shoulder represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.  Wearing a richly bejewelled dhotis she exhibits the Vitarka Mudra, the gesture of argument, with both hands. Her left hand raised, her right hand lowered. With a downward gaze, her divine face, serene in expression, radiates rapturous bliss.

Two available, a pair that came to us from an important British, single owner collection. Being individually cast by the lost wax method, then hand-finished, there are variations in the design.  (They are shown together in image 2 and the last four images.)
