Antique Indian marble kharale, or mortar and pestle. Mortar hand-hewn in white Makrana marble. Presented here with a later hardwood pestle.
This lovely antique Indian karale, or mortar and pestle, would have once been central to Indian rural life in Rajasthan back in the day. And today, no doubt, destined to be employed in the role it has already spent decades performing in a more contemporary 21st century kitchen environment.
The mortar has been hand-carved out of a single piece of Makrana marble, the very same building material used in the construction of the Taj Mahal in Agra, commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1632.
Oddly enough, we often source mortars without pestles, as here, probably because they are both heavy and substantial, and difficult to mislay, unlike the lighter pestles? For that reason, the related pestle it's presented with here is new, and been turned from an Indian tropical hardwood.
We have recently sourced several antique marble and granite karales, each with a distinctly original feel and finish. Genuine antiques from Rajasthan, not modern reproductions.
Unique artefacts from the mystical place that is India.
