Huge antique Indian marble kharale, or mortar and pestle. Hand-hewn in black granite from Rajasthan's Aravalli Hills. This would have originally been used in temple ceremonies and is both substantial and rare. 19th c.

This lovely antique ceremonial Indian kharale, or mortar and pestle, would have once been central to Indian temple life in Rajasthan in the 19th c. Today, no doubt, it's destined to be employed in a contemporary 21st century kitchen environment.

Both the mortar and related pestle have been hand-carved from single pieces of black granite from Rajasthan's Aravelli Hills, a mountain range that was formed 1.8 billion years ago, and even older than the Himalayas.

Oddly enough, we often source them mortars without pestles, probably because these are both heavy and substantial, and difficult to mislay. Unlike the lighter pestles? This is a rare chance to get a companion set in black granite.

We have recently sourced several antique marble and granite kharales, each with a distinctly original feel and finish. Genuine antiques from Rajasthan, not modern reproductions. AVAILABLE IN SEPARATE LISTINGS.
