The 1997 AMP Bathurst 1000 was won by Larry Perkins and Russell Ingall in the iconic Perkins Engineering Castrol Holden VS Commodore. In a race heavily affected by rain and constant interruptions, the pair delivered a composed and strategic drive to take victory after the event was declared early due to worsening conditions. The win gave Perkins his sixth Bathurst triumph and marked Ingall’s first, while the livery on the Castrol Commodore became one of the most recognisable and celebrated Holden touring cars of the late 1990s.
