1998 BMW 318is M52b28 swapped
I dont really want to sell this car. I've owned it since 2021 and its been a fantastic car. Started out in my ownership with 60,XXX miles as a 318is with the M44b19. I aquired an E38 728i doner car and swapped this engine into this very clean E36 shell. Its only ever been a summer car so its been parked in a dry shed tucked away for the winter. Built to be a fast road car with the intention of track days (never actually got to a track). Never drifted.
The M52b28 was also fully rebuilt using the following parts:
M52 alusil block and pistons
Mahl piston rings
ACL race bearings rods and main bearings
Hopwood motorsport oil pump
New timing chains (oil pump, crank to cam, cam to cam)
Rebuilt vanos unit
ARP headstuds (purchased off hopwood motorsport)
New gaskets
The engine has done at least 5,000 miles since the rebuild.
Engine, Gearbox and Diff:
M52b28
E34 engine mount bushes
B2D emgine mounts
Driftworks lightweight M3 flywheel
New LUK M3 clutch and pressure plate
New throwout bearing
M50 manifold
Airfilter
Full stainless exhaust including manifolds
DGMaps Ecu remap
7.2k limiter
Raised idle
Cat delete
Standard 318is getrag gearbox
Standard 318is rear end with 3.38 or 3.45 diff
I have a full medium case rear end that I can include with the car. I planned to powdercoat it, polybush it and get a limited slip diff but havent got round to it.
Suspension:
HSD monopro coilovers with 10k front 14k rear springs (less than 2000miles on these)
Powerflex lolypop bushes
All the rest of the bushes are standard.
Brakes:
E46 330 front brake calipers with 325mm discs
Stock 318is rear brakes
All pads and discs were replaced last year with forodo dics and pads (standard road pads)
Wheels and tires:
Style 66s refurbed professionally 3 or 4 years ago 17inch 8j square et20
Wheel studs and nut conversion
Michelin Pilot Sport 4 215/40/17 on the front
Michelin Pilot sport 5 215/40/17 on the rear, bought these in march/april 2026 few hundred miles at most.
Exterior:
Factory fitted mtech (M3) body kit
The rear diffuser is an aftermarket one so i didnt cut up the orginal single tip diffuser. Both difusers will come with the car as well.
LTW replica wing
All arches are solid no rust and have never been rolled
Interior:
Factory sport interior
Momo protipo steering wheel
Coolerworx chasis mounted short shifter
Drivers seat is a corbeau bucket seat however I have the factory seat as well. Factory seats are in really good condition.
Its got the basic heater controls so no climate control panel and no trip computer either.
I swapped the clocks from 4 cylinder to 6 cylinder clocks to correct the rev counter. Mileage on the 6 cylinder clocks was the same as the 4 cylinder clocks at time of swap, i still have the 4 cylinder clocks for proof. Swapped them over at 81k and the new clocks have 86k from driving it 5k in the last few years.
New radio that looks oem with bluetooth was installed this year as well.
Only thing that lets the interior down is the headliner, this has been replaced but is already sagging after only a few years.
I am probably forgetting other bits I've done to the car over the years. Ive got a stack of service history and reciepts with the car. Its always been well maintained in my ownership, and had a service every year before its left the shed for the summer.
The car is currently on my private plate J5XTH but will come on S363ADK.
I dont really want to sell this car, but time to be a grown up. Any questions ask away.
