Antique Union Fraternal Masonic Wood Voting Blackball Box With Handle, including 45 White and 5 Black Balls.

These "Blackball" voting boxes were historically used by unions, fraternal organizations such as the Freemasons and Odd Fellows for secret membership voting.  The black fabric was used to hide your hand during voting.  Members would cast either a white ball (acceptance) or a black ball (rejection) into the chute. Votes remained hidden until the box was opened, ensuring privacy. The term “blackballed” originates from this practice, as a single black ball could deny a candidate membership.

Very good condition for its age with only minor scuffs.  The balls are very old and handmade.

Measures 14" long with the handle, it is 3 3/4"h at the back (by handle), 1 1/2"h at the front, and 5 3/4" wide.
