A small antique bronze of the Buddha in meditation after his enlightenment. Seated on a three-tiered throne with the flaring seven heads of a giant Naga, the serpent King Muchalinda, rising behind protectively behind. His hands are in the Dhyana mudra, the gesture of Meditation.

According to Buddhist tradition, whilst the Buddha was meditating after his enlightenment a great storm arose. Mucalinda the multi-hooded nāga serpent rose from the earth, coiled beneath him as a seat, and spread his hoods above the Buddha to protect him.

Although the iconography of this statue is characteristic of Cambodian Khmer art, it was widely shared with Laos and the Isan region in Northeast Thailand which is where this piece originated in the early 20th c.

To the back of the naga hood is a well known SE Asian motif, a Dharmachakra. Widely translated from the Sanskrit as the Wheel of Law, it represents the Buddha's teachings and the path to enlightenment, its eight spokes symbolizing the Eightfold Path to this end.

The Buddha's hands are held in a meditation Mudra. Fingers gently folded over the lap with palms facing upward, a symbol of gentleness and purity, his compassionate face bestowing peace, blessings and inner serenity on his devotees.

This bronze Buddhist statue comes to us from an important SE Asian collection, one of a number of deities and Buddhas listed here on Bay.
