An exotic Indian Reverse Glass Painting in authentic old Art Deco period frame, a Mughal princess in an elaborate lakeside setting with maid in attendance.

On offer here is a particularly pretty example of Indian reverse glass painting of a typical motif from the subcontinent, a Mughal princess in an elaborate lakeside setting with maid in attendance. It's presented in an authentic Art Deco period frame.

Glass painting is very much in the Indian tradition, in which generation after generation of painters recreate images that have gone before with, no doubt, Indian miniatures being used as inspiration in this respect. Particularly in this case.

In this age-old tradition, a painting or engraving laid down on the back of the glass is known as a reverse glass painting for obvious reasons. They are noted for their sheer brilliance, stunning clarity and use of rich colours and gold.

Indian glass paintings celebrate all things Indian in their choice  of subject matter. Familiar themes depicted are Royal Mughal court scenes, as here, as well as celebrations of nature and wildlife from the subcontinent, deities, mythological figures and Hindu epic themes.

Reverse glass paintings look good displayed en masse, which is why we also sell them here in pairs, with other examples available in threes.
