A pair of antique bronze Monk Attendants, Sāriputta and Moggallāna. Lost wax castings from the Luang Prabang region of Laos. Late 19th c. / early 20th c. THE PAIR ARE PRICED AND SOLD SEPARATELY.
Recently sourced from an important SE Asian collection.
On offer here are a pair of bronze figures depicting Buddhist monks in meditation pose, each holding an alms bowl. The pair represent Sāriputta and Moggallāna, the two chief disciples of the historical Buddha, traditionally placed to the Buddha's right and left in Theravāda altar settings.
Both wear the monastic robe, the civara, and are seated cross-legged on lotus pedestals.
Sāriputta, positioned to the Buddha's right, is known for wisdom and depicted with a downward gaze. He is the bronze shown here in images 4-14.
Moggallāna, to the Buddha's right, is known for supernatural powers and shown with a more uplifted gaze. He is the bronze shown here in images 15 -24.
The combination of traditional Lao casting technique, open unsealed base, stylized parallels to documented Luang Prabang altar sets and aged patination strongly suggest they date to the late19th to early 20th c.
