An antique Southern Indian bronze oil lamp of the Hindu deity Lakshmi known as Deepalakshmi. A significant lost wax casting with aged patination, particularly used during Diwali, the festival of light. 19th c. Possibly earlier.

Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of fertility, abundance, and well-being. This beautifully rendered Indian lost wax Chola-style bronze shows Lakshmi as Deepalakshmi. She carries a uterine shaped lamp upon which traditionally a light is placed, especially during Diwali, the festival of light, celebrated as the victory of humankind over despondent forces.

This statue exhibits the full beauty, elegance, grace and artistry associated with the Chola-style pieces. Her sensuous feminine beauty is timeless, the full breasts, the slender waist, the rounded hips complimented by her intricate jewellery and coiffured hair. 

The goddesses’ countenance bespeaks of deep inner peace, a reflection of santosha, Sanskrit for the deep contentment that is our innate nature and the gift of the gods and goddesses.

Deepalakshmi statues became popular around the latter part of the 16th century in India and are recognized as a vital element in the home temple. This beautifully rendered bronze dates to the 19th century, possibly earlier.
