Antique Indian Hindu home shrine finished in a distressed turquoise. OM motif in saffron to the rear back panel. With carved Nandi motifs to the front leading edge, it would originally been used to worship Shiva. Mid-19th c.
This sacred home shrine comes from Rajasthan with associated wear from decades of ritual worship. Typically, shrines like this would have graced a high caste Brahmin home, and been the focal point of daily puja, a prayer ritual performed to honour and worship one or more deities.
With two carved Nandi motifs facing each other on the front leading edge, the shrine would originally been used to worship Shiva.
The auspicious OM symbol decorates the back panel, The rear and side panels are decorated with Mughal arched detailing.
