A fantastic piece of authentic Japanese railway history — a genuine double-sided enamel destination/route board originally used on Japan National Railways (JNR) commuter trains. These boards were mounted in the windows of passenger cars to display the train's route to waiting passengers on the platform.
Side A: 宇都宮 ↔ 大宮 (UTSUNOMIYA ↔ ŌMIYA) Side B: 小金井 ↔ 大宮 (KOGANEI ↔ ŌMIYA)
Both routes served the greater Tokyo metropolitan area, operating along what is now the JR Utsunomiya Line. Ōmiya (present-day Saitama City) is today home to Japan's famous Railway Museum. The sign features bold kanji characters with romanized station names below, a double-headed arrow, and the characteristic rectangular form with side mounting slots used to slide the board into train car window frames.
Construction is heavy enameled steel with a white ground and dark lettering. Shows authentic age-related patina, edge rust, and paint chipping consistent with decades of real service use — not a reproduction. Measures approximately 24 inches wide based on the tape measure shown in photos.
A highly collectible piece for Japan railway enthusiasts, tetsudo (鉄道) collectors, or anyone who loves vintage transportation signage and Japanese antiques.
