A small Indian bronze of Shiva's vahana, the sacred bull Nandi in standing form. Caste in bronze it displays aged patination from decades of ritual worship. Early 20th.

Nandi, a celestial bull, is the vahana, or mount, of the important Hindu deity Lord Shiva, the name "Nandi" meaning joy or bliss.

As the mount of Shiva, Nandi holds an elevated position in Hindu mythology, embodying several important qualities that complement Shiva’s nature: Strength and Power. Loyalty and devotion. Purity and austerity. Fertility and prosperity. Nandi is is not just Shiva's vehicle but is also considered his most ardent worshiper.

Throughout India Nandi stands guard at the entrance of every Shiva temple. The video in image two, and the last image  feature the second largest Nandi in India at the 11th c Brihadishwara Temple, The Big Temple, in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.

This beautifully detailed small bronze has a slot to the top of its back, suggesting it would have had another bronze attached to it at some point. Perhaps even Lord Shiva himself in some form?

Please look carefully at the photographs as they form part of the description.
