An antique, Southern Indian bronze of the Hindu goddess Parvati in two armed form. Early 20th c. Possibly earlier?
When depicted alone Parvati is usually depicted having four arms, and traditionally shown holding a trident, mirror, rudraksha, bell, dish, goad, sugarcane stalk or flowers, in particular the lotus.
When she appears alongside Shiva she generally appears with two arms. As here. This would suggest this antique bronze was originally modelled and cast using the lost wax method as one of a pair with Shiva.
This particular bronze depiction displays auras of sensuality, divinity, and royalty. The circular, eight petal motif to the rear of the headdress is typical of Southern Indian bronzes, and suggests this may have been cast in Swamimalai, the centre of bronze manufacture in Tamil Nadu for over 1000 years since Chola times.
