The MGB GT is widely regarded as a masterpiece of British design, developed over four years—coincidentally, about the same time many examples now spend undergoing full nut-and-bolt restorations! “Tulip,” offers an approachable and rewarding project.

This rare GT is finished in its original colour of Black Tulip, complemented by ochre trim, wire wheels and overdrive. It offers scope for improvement in all areas.

The bodywork and chassis appear reasonably sound, but doubtless welding will be required.  The paintwork is very patchy and is not as good as it looks in the photos. Accompanying paperwork shows that major restorative work was undertaken in 1997. The car has not been run for the past four years, although prior to that it started easily. The wheels have been powder-coated and are fitted with new tyres.

Obviously a lot of recommissioning will be required. The horn and interior light are inoperative, and the rear lights function intermittently. The nearside window regulator needs replacement, and the front footwell carpets are missing. As expected, there are also various oil leaks.

This is not a turnkey example, but for the right enthusiast it represents an honest and appealing project, with plenty of weekend enjoyment ahead. With care and attention, “Tulip” has every chance of returning to her former glory.
